Madh Island in the monsoon: what changes and who to call
From June to September the ferry usually stops, the beaches turn dangerous and homes need looking after. A practical guide to the monsoon on Madh Island, with the helplines worth saving.
The monsoon normally reaches Mumbai around 11 June and withdraws around 8 October, according to the India Meteorological Department.1 The heaviest months are June to September. On Madh Island that changes how you get here, whether you can go near the sea, and what your home needs.
Getting on and off the island
The Versova–Madh ferry is suspended for about four months of the monsoon, or runs with frequent disruptions.234 No official start and end dates are published, so don't count on it between June and September. Plan to come by road through Malad and Marve instead. It's a longer trip, especially from Andheri and Versova.

The beaches
Even in fine weather, BMC's beach-safety list marks Aksa (Dana Pani) and Marve as unsafe.9 In the monsoon the sea is rougher still: Aksa is described as more dangerous in the monsoon.10
- High-tide days. BMC publishes a calendar of the season's highest tides each year and asks people to keep away from beaches on those days. In 2026 it listed 24 tides above 4.5 metres between June and September.6
- Orange and red alert days. In 2022 BMC limited beach entry on alert days to 6 am to 10 am, and added lifeguards on alert days, high-tide days and weekends.5 Check the current rules, or simply skip the beach on alert days.

Getting your home ready
Homes near the sea take a beating from wind-driven rain. Jobs worth doing in April and May, before the rain starts:
- Roof and terrace. Clear drains and gutters, check the waterproofing, and fix cracks before the first heavy rain. Repairs are much harder once the rain has set in.
- Walls and windows. Damp patches and peeling paint inside often mean water getting in from outside. Book painting and waterproofing early, before the rush.
- Wiring. Get an electrician to look at outdoor sockets, meter boxes and anything near a leak. Never touch a switchboard or appliance that's wet; switch off at the main if you can do it safely.
- Doors and woodwork. Swollen doors and windows that won't shut are a monsoon classic. A carpenter can plane and seal them.
- Standing water. Empty pots, tyres and trays where rainwater collects, since mosquitoes breed in it. Pest control is worth booking early in the season.
Numbers to save
The first four are from BMC's official list of emergency contacts:7
- 1916: BMC disaster management, for flooding, fallen trees and other rain emergencies.78
- 112: police and all emergencies.
- 101: fire brigade.
- 108: ambulance.
- 19122: Adani Electricity's 24-hour line, for power cuts and sparking cables.11
When the rain stops
After the monsoon, check the roof and walls again and fix the damp while it can dry out. The dry months, October to May, are the time for repairs, painting and waterproofing.
