Madh Island's beaches, and how to stay safe

Aksa, Dana Pani, Erangal and Madh are lovely to walk, but the sea here is dangerous. What each beach is like, what BMC says about swimming, and how to have a safe day out.

Madh Island has a string of sandy beaches along its western shore, facing the open Arabian Sea: Aksa, Dana Pani, Erangal and Madh, with Marve just to the north.67 They're good for a walk, a sunset or a meal nearby. They are not good for swimming.

Read this first: the sea here is dangerous

BMC's beach-safety list, based on a 2006 state government resolution, marks "Aksa Beach (Danapani)" and Marve as unsafe. It also says no beach can be called permanently safe.1

The numbers bear it out. A study in Current Science counted 445 people rescued and 47 deaths at Aksa between 2006 and 2018.2 In June 2026 a 17-year-old was feared drowned there, and fire brigade divers and the Navy searched for him.4

Things that keep people safe here:

  • Stay on the sand. Paddling turns into wading quickly on a crowded day. Police have asked people not to enter the water at high tide, and not at all if they can't swim.9
  • Check the tide. High tide covers much of the beach. In 2022 BMC added lifeguards at Aksa and other busy beaches on high-tide days, weekends, holidays and alert days.5
  • Stay away on alert days. In 2022, BMC limited beach entry on orange and red rain alert days to the early morning, 6 am to 10 am.5 Rules can change from year to year, so the safest choice is to skip the beach on alert days.
  • Keep children within arm's reach, especially when the beach is crowded. Crowds are when rescues pile up: lifeguards at Aksa spent about two hours pulling people out on one busy Sunday in 2023.11
  • In an emergency, call 112 (police and all emergencies) or 101 (fire brigade).12 Tell them which beach you're on and the nearest landmark.

Aksa Beach

Aksa is one of the island's most popular beaches, in Aksa village on the Madh–Marve Road. The INS Hamla naval base is at one end and the small Dana Pani beach at the other, and cottages and hotels line the shore.3 It fills up at weekends.

This is the beach in BMC's warning and in the drowning study.12 Lifeguards are posted here, but rescues still happen on busy days.11 The 271 bus has a stop called Aksa Beach: see how to reach Madh Island.

Dana Pani

Dana Pani is a small beach at the far end of Aksa from INS Hamla.37 It's quieter than Aksa, but BMC's warning covers it by name: "Aksa Beach (Danapani)".1 There's no bus stop called Dana Pani; the nearest are Aksa Beach and Dharavli Village.

Erangal Beach

Erangal beach runs beside Erangal village, home to St Bonaventure Church, which dates from 1575. During the church's feast in January, pilgrims traditionally camped in the fields and on the beach.8 Erangal is also a regular film-shoot location.7

We found no official safety notice for Erangal itself. That doesn't make it safe: the same open sea runs along the whole shore.1

Madh beach and "Silver Beach"

At the Madh end of the island, the bus stop by the church is called Madh Beach–Madh Church. The Government's Film Facilitation Office lists a "Silver Beach" on Madh Island.7 Don't mix it up with the better-known Silver Beach in Juhu: directions and details online often belong to that one.

Marve Beach

Marve is just north of Aksa, near where the road from Malad comes in. BMC lists it as unsafe because of strong underwater currents.1

Madh Fort

The old fort at the island's southern tip, facing Versova, is under defence control (the Indian Air Force) and not open to the public.710 It's worth seeing from the outside or from the ferry, but don't plan a visit inside.

Make a day of it

Start early, before the crowds and the heat. Pick a spot near a lifeguard, and leave before high tide. For a meal or a place to stay nearby, look on Madh Local.
